Proof

By David Auburn [PG-13]

Directed by Tony Catanese.

"Proof" is a family drama. It explores sibling rivalry, trust, parent child relationships, responsibility, gender bias, love, loss and compassion. The addition of a graduate student brings the drama to another level, a mystery. It becomes a detective story. Who created the newly discovered mathematical proof? As the play draws to its climax, sexism, mental illness and intellectual passions are also explored and the audience is asked to draw its own conclusions.

Director's Notes

PROOF is a funny play! The juxtaposition of serious moments with humorous ones makes the story and characters accessible. The play presents life as we live it with all of its wonderful contradictions.

PROOF is a family drama. It explores sibling rivalry, trust, parent child relationships, responsibility, reversal of roles, gender bias, love, and loss. The addition of Hal brings the family drama to another level: a mystery. It becomes a detective story. Who is the author of the mathematical proof? As the family drama and mystery develop, issues like sexism, sacrifice, independence, and intellectual passion are explored. The playwright shows us the humanity and goodness in each character. He does not take sides. He asks us to make our own judgments.

PROOF is a small and intimate play. Each of the four characters has his or her own reality. They each experience the same thing (the death of a man and the search for the author of the mathematical proof), but each sees the situation through a different set of lenses.

PROOF teaches us about compassion and empathy. By making an attempt to understand and to share another person's situation, feelings and emotions, we allow ourselves to explore our own humanity and to decide how we choose to live our lives in the context of family, community, nation and the world.
