Deathtrap

A comedy by Ira Levin

Directed by Amy Amani.

Sidney Bruhl, a successful Broadway writer, is struggling to overcome a "dry spell." A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a college student — a thriller which Sidney recognizes as a potential Broadway hit. Sidney collaborates on a devious plan with his wife and the student. Thereafter, the suspense mounts and the plot twists and turns. This ingeniously constructed play offers a rare and skillful blending of two priceless theatrical ingredients — gasp-inducing thrills and spontaneous laughter!

Director's Notes

Deathtrap is pretty much a classic of the modern theater. It is intricately plotted and full of twists and turns. One of our biggest obstacle was finding (and using) the weapons. Fortunately for us, T.J. is a bit of a Medieval weaponry fiend! Ask him about the battle-ax, if you get a chance! Using blood in a show always poses unique problems - usually in the form of laundry! Finally, finding the comedy, in what could otherwise be a very gruesome show, was my personal challenge. This is the first time I have directed a thriller and the mechanics are quite different than anything I've ever done before. It has been a challenging, interesting, and ultimately enjoyable experience for me. My fonder wish is that you can leave here tonight feeling that it was an enjoyable experience for you, too.

Cast

Kyle Alm Stage Manager

Aside from singing and acting, Kyle has spent countless hours on the running crew with his teammate, T.J. Together they have run Noises Off, Steel Magnolias, Something's Afoot and La Cage aux folles. Kyle is fascinated with all aspects of theater and plans to continue working in Evergreen for the rest of his high school career.

 Amy Amani Director

This is Amy's third time directing for the Players. You may remember her last show. It was a simple little piece called Noises Off. Amy got her formal theatrical training at Northwestern University and her informal training in Chicago and Los Angeles before landing in Denver. Amy's one hope for you, the audience, is that before the night is over, you'll scream!

 Scott Gibson Sidney Bruhl

Scott's credits include Moon Over Buffalo (Denver Victorian), Adaptation (Conifer StageDoor), Swimming in Seuss (Oriental Theatre), Run for your Wife (Westminster Dinner Theatre), Spider's Web (South Suburban), Articles of War (Jack's Theatre), as well as roles in several Players' productions. He is cofounder of Conundrum State Theatre Company. He directed The Maiden's Prayer, Once Upon a Midnight Dreary, Accomplice and more.

Ted has been involved with community theater for more than 25 years in such diverse roles as director, producer, stage manager, writer and actor. He is a past president of the Evergreen Players. Ted has directed in New England and the mid-Atlantic states. His local directorial credits include Pump Boys and Dinettes, Broadway Bound and Butterflies are Free.

 Karen Kargel Helga Ten Dorp

Karen is happy to be at Center/Stage again. She was last seen here as Prince John in Lion in Winter. Although she doesn't specialize in male roles, she recently played the dual role of Dr. Glass (a bald man) and Sonya in Conifer StageDoor's production of Room Service. She enjoyed playing Cecily in The Odd Couple at the Denver Victorian and Miss Erickson in Present Laughter at the Denver Civic Theatre but she feels most at home here in Evergreen.

T J McSherry Stage Manager

This is T.J.'s first time stage managing but he s been second in command for four Players' shows, including Noises Off, Steel Magnolias, Something's Afoot, and most recently La Cage aux folles.
