Crimes Of The Heart
A Comedy by Beth Henley
Directed by Kathleen Davis.
Old Granddaddy is in the hospital and his granddaughters have gathered at the family home in Hazlehurst, Miss., to await word. So far, the news isn't good. Meantime the sisters have their own troubles to deal with. Lenny, the oldest sister, has been taking care of Old Granddaddy, neglecting herself in the process. Lately she's been sleeping on a cot in the kitchen. Meg, the middle sister, has come home from a stint on the West Coast, ostensibly to help Lenny deal with youngest sister Babe, who's out on bail for shooting her husband in the stomach. But maybe Meg has other reasons for coming home. Maybe her singing career has fizzled and she's looking for a better gig.
As the story unfolds, you find out how these three sisters got into the dire, yet somehow funny, predicaments they're in. There's just a chance that awkward young lawyer will figure out a way to keep Babe out of jail. Perhaps Meg will rekindle an old romance. Maybe somebody will finally put that witchy cousin Chick in her place. Maybe Lenny will finally get a life.
In its review of "Crimes of the Heart," the New York Times noted, "while this play overflows with infectious high spirits, it is also, unmistakably, the tale of a very troubled family. Such is Miss Henley's prodigious talent that she can serve us pain as though it were a piece of cake."
Cast
Amy Amani Chick Boyle
If you are a regular patron of the Evergreen Players, you may be thinking, "Amy Amani... name rings a bell, but don't recognize the face.' That's because this is Amy's on-stage debut after a four-year stint behind the scenes. Amy directed Noises Off and Deathtrap (just to name two) and has worked props and costumes for other Players' productions. She has been seen on several other stages around Denver and Boulder, and received her training from Northwestern university and with Groundlings in LA. For more information, please see Amy after the show and she can give you a copy of her resume! "Hi John and Sean! I love you!"
Whitney M. Ayers Babe Botrelle
As an Evergreen native, performing with The Players just feels like home. Although she currently resides in Littleton, she loves being able to get back to her mountain roots. Crimes of the Heart is her fourth production with The Players, and she hopes people will be (able to enjoy and relate to this "dysfunctional" family just as much as she has.
Judd Belstock Barnette Lloyd
Judd is pleased to be in his second show with the Evergreen Players. He draws on several influences for inspiration in this part, particularly Lionel Hutz, whose law firm/shoe repair shop is now sadly closed. To all you ladies out there, Judd would like to ask that you do NOT shoot your husbands and significant others, as this will not impress him.
Davis Bennett Assistant Director
Davis Bennett fell in love with Crimes of the Heart when he portrayed Doc in a production of the play 18 years ago. He has enjoyed being able to contribute to the present production and working with such a marvelous cast and director. Players audiences most recently saw Davis portraying Owen Musser in last fall's production of The Foreigner. He again wants to assure everyone that he has very little in common with that character.
Kathleen Davis Director
Kathleen Davis is a 35-year veteran of the Evergreen Players. Her directing credits include Sleuth, Pippin, Little Shop of Horrors, The Crucible, and Greater Tuna. Kathleen recently retired from a career as a musician and teacher in order to devote more time to writing, theater, and basket weaving. She is grateful to her family for their long-suffering ingestion of pre-rehearsal sandwiches.
Cori Docter Meg Magrath
Cori has been "trodding the boards" for over two decades. Most recently she appeared in Heavens! A Nude Beach in Aspen, at the CCTC 2001 summer theatre festival. She is a full-time wife and mom, home schooling her two daughters. She is also a part-time midwife. Cori is the female owner of the infamous Wildflower Cafe. She is thrilled to be working with such a talented cast, crew, and brilliant director, and loves being part of this awesome production. She would like to dedicate her performance to sisters everywhere.
Michelle Grimes Lenny Magrath
Michelle has performed in Colorado since 1976. Her scope of work includes theatre, film and television. Michelle currently is teaching theatre to young adults at the Lakewood Performing Arts Center. During the day, she teaches writing and social studies, as well as directing and producing the after-school drama club and many other shows in town. Michelle is thrilled to be performing for the first time with the Evergreen Players. Michelle also has performed at The Arvada Center, Littleton Town Hall Arts Center, South Suburban Theatre Company, The Morrison Theatre, The Denver Civic Theatre and the University of Denver. Michelle would like to thank her family for their love and support in the pursuit of her dreams. "The stage is not merely the meeting place of all the arts, but is also the return of art to life." - Oscar Wilde
